Activity: Stream Table Simulation

Description: This assignment asks the students to use the stream table to create a meander, oxbow lake, valley, floodplain, and a delta. Students have to determine whether to use the fast moving water faucet or the slow moving water faucet to create their assigned landforms. Students then have to figure out what type of slope should be used and how much sediment (sand) they should use to create each landform. Students have been provided with a definition of what each "landform" is, however they must determine how to actually create one. This demonstrates the processes that go into the formation of each landform. Another idea, even though seemingly obviousm, that students should also be witnessing during this activity is that water moves from higher elevation to lower elevation, and will take the easiest route. Students should also be noticing that sediment is carried along with the movement of the water.

Assessment: Students are asked to make a written description of how each landform is formed. Students are then asked to sketch the processes and outcome of each landform. Because this is an informal assesment, I will be observing the activity and gauging whether or not students are able to apply their knowledge of the landforms created by river to the stream table. Students will also be using the descriptions and sketches to assist them in future assignments.

In the Rhode Island GSE's scientific inquiry is stressed. This activity addressed the following...

  • Communicate Ideas-students worked in groups and discussed how landforms could be built
  • Design, conduct investigation-students used their knowledge of the landforms to design a way to build them
  • Observe-students observed their creations to tell whether or not the landforms acted as they do in nature
  • Use tools and technology- students used the stream table and other sand tools to create their landforms
